STROHs WIN! STROHs WIN!

In the Texhoma Roost Regional, golfers were tested at a Perry Maxwell course called Dornick. In the south Texas territory, the dedicated individuals who competed in the event are members of an elite squad known as the STROHs Roost Regional Team. This is their story.

Coming into the weekend, we certainly felt behind the eight-ball. Three of our four guys had never seen the course, and one of us was battling a nagging elbow injury. Undettered we made our way up I35/I45 to Ardmore to put our best foot forward. At @Iceman’s recommendation, we snagged some lunch at the Hamburger Inn. Some delicious food, but also kind of a risk prior to going out on a golf course for, checks math, 4 hours? (Review: Solid T-Shirts, may have had a 6 year old bussing dishes, certainly a fan of those who pay in cash, your Coke/Sweet Tea glass is never less than half full.)
We checked in at Dornick, home of one Perry Maxwell himself (side note: I feel like a lot of courses like to use the “home of xyz”, we gotta start investigating how many homes these dudes have), and met our wonderful host for the weekend, Daniel “Verne” Vernon. He gave us the rundown of the place and cut us loose
He’s also the only person I’ve ever heard call @Iceman “Stefan”. Very confusing
Dornick’s a simple, small-town club, with a clubhouse at the top of the hill, and merch with a logo stuck perfectly in 2002. Turns out, the logo refresh is an added package not in the standard fare for El Doakito.

This is a: bag of balls from the front desk, “no woods on the driving range please” kinda spot. We jumped on the tee around 3PM, four STROHs ready for @iceman to guide us around and tell us how many trees you can boom a high-cut over (turns out, there’s a lot!). We enjoyed a solid afternoon, ended up grouping up as a 7-some with Verne, got to see the Maxwell family gravesite, then grabbed some dinner and prepared to tackle 36-holes of Stroke Play that weekend.

We do need to have a serious conversation about who is leaving a stolen range ball on Perry Maxwell’s grave, seems like asking for bad karma
Day One of Competition
Saturday morning began with lots of familiar faces, Supercell had invited anyone interested to play, so a decent contingent of Plexers and Supercell players came up, the familiar face of @Tyler Rosser greeting us and cheering us on, and @ChaseColvin (Plexer) telling us we were toast. The format for the weekend was two 18-hole rounds at 80% handicap, where the first round best 3 scores count, second round all 4. I petitioned Riley (Big Plex) and Josh (Supercell) to have us go best 3 both days in case the good doctor’s elbow decided it was cooked post-Saturday. They graciously accepted, so we were ready to go. STROHs came out HOT in round one. Led by the LABmaster himself, @Jonny, went net -3 thru 9, -2 for yours truly, and +1 for @Iceman had us up 10 on Supercell and 13 on Big Plex at the turn. The ham-and-egg combo of Ice and Jonny was kicking ASS. The back 9 at Dornick is by far the harder of the two nines, but we managed to keep our feet on the pedal and tidy up R1 with a strong lead. At the end of
Round 1 Results:
STROH’s: -1 (209)
Supercell: +8 (218)
Big Plex: +18 (228)
As one can expect when you finish a round at noon in late July, we housed some burgers and turned right back around for a Horserace. Four clubs, let’s see who gets the furthest for a prize of bourbon. Three of our STROHs (@Iceman, @Jonny, and myself) made it through 6, 6, and 7, but alas, the bottle of bourbon wasn’t destined for us. We had bigger fish to fry. After another 9 holes of Alt-Shot, a $30 spot in my pocket, dinner awaited.
Day Two of Competition
The team woke up to a fun family history discovery, where it turned out the @Benzopyrene Walker clan hails from Ardmore. Grandpa Walker was born and raised in Ardmore, clearly setting the tone for Luke on day 2 to bring pride to the family name. The format stayed the same as yesterday, 80% handicaps, best 3 out of 4 scores. Starting the day with a nine-shot lead, we knew were in a good position, but Supercell was only a couple of STROH slip-ups away from catching up.
STROHs were up 19 shots thru 6 and stood comfortably atop the leaderboard at the turn.
@Jonny had a STRONG 2 net 1 en-route to a front nine net +1, I had a net -1, and @Benzopyrene was at +2 as we got to the top of the hill to begin the back 9.
Round 2, thru 9:
STROH’s: +2
Supercell: +20
Big Plex: +28
Supercell did what they knew how to do and clawed a few back on the back 9, getting as close as 13 back thru 15, but once all scores were submitted, the STROH’s dominance was complete.
Round 2, and Final Results:
STROH’s: +9 (429)
Supercell: +23 (443)
Big Plex: +37 (457)
@Benzopyrene GRINDED on Sunday, posting a net 76 to be our 3rd counting score, elbow be damned! The family history clearly lit a fire under him!
Start spreading the news, STROH’s win in OK!
